Getting around

Road access is the big drawcard. The main roads through the suburb include Welshpool Road, Kewdale Road, Orrong Road, Rutland Avenue and Swansea Street, with quick links to Leach Highway, Roe Highway and Tonkin Highway.

The Kewdale Freight Terminal is only a few kilometres away and Perth Airport is about 3 kilometres from parts of the precinct. Bus routes 36, 51, 280, 282, 283, 284 and 285 serve the area. Welshpool railway station on the Armadale and Thornlie lines closed in November 2023 as part of rail upgrades.

A short history

Welshpool has been an industrial suburb for most of its life. During the Second World War, railway sidings served a munitions factory. In 1949, Chamberlain built its first tractors in the area. Through the second half of the 20th century it grew into one of Perth's first major industrial districts and its three complexes of silo towers storing feed for poultry and agriculture remain local landmarks.
